WELCOME to Phoenix Wado Ryu

Phoenix Wado Ryu is a successful friendly traditional karate club based in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, England.

Senior Instructors Clive Lange and Peter Rixon established Phoenix Wado Ryu on 3rd March 2003. Clive and Peter's aim is not to re-invent Wado Ryu but to re-discover its true meaning, hence the name Phoenix Wado Ryu symbolising the rebirth of the original philosophy of the style.

Our objective is to undertake and encourage the study and practice of Wado Ryu karate in a safe and positive environment, to continually develop both ourselves and individual student's health and fitness, self confidence and self discipline and to provide knowledge and skills for self-protection.

Although a relatively new Club, Phoenix Wado Ryu has over 70 members has gone from strength to strength and we firmly believe that we have established a Club that offers something quite different from other local Karate Clubs.

The Wado Ryu style was created by Hironori Ohtsuka, and uses high and mobile stances and fast movement, similar to ju-jitsu stances. Some of the principles of Wado Ryu include blocking attacks and countering in the same movement. Blocking and defensive movement typically include side shifting to avoid an attack and deflecting attacks without harsh collision.

We try to remain relaxed at all times, except for the instant before delivering a technique, which reduces reaction times and increases the speed of movement and techniques. We rely on speed and technique rather than brute force which is why Wado Ryu is particularly good for Women and Children. We also employ throwing techniques because of the ju-jitsu background.

We try to apply the following principles to all aspects of Wado Ryu training:

  • Do not use unnecessary strength/power;
  • Do not use unnecessary movement; and
  • Do not use unnecessary technique.

The results are efficient and effective techniques.
